Certified Surgical Technologist: Operating Room
Position: Surgical Technologist
Location: Columbus, NC

A $5,000 sign-on bonus is being offered for this position.

St. Luke’s Hospital has a new opportunity for an experienced surgical technologist to our operating room! Essential Functions:
1) The Surgical Tech provides direct and individualized care including, but not limited to Association of Surgical Technologist (AST) Standards regarding:
a. Counts
b. Sharps safety
c. Identification of correct patient, correct surgical site and correct surgical procedure.
d. Time Out participation
e. Safe use of pneumatic tourniquets
f. Safe surgical positioning and movement/transfers
g. Surgical equipment safety (endo monitors, pumps,
accessories, etc.)
h. Laser safety
i. Electrosurgical safety
j. Radiation safety
k. Environmental safety
i. Proper use/cleaning of mobile devices
ii. Patient shift-change handoff

2) Sterile Processing functions include, but are not limited to:
a. Sterilizes instruments, equipment, utensils, linen and supplies using various types of autoclaves and aerators. Loads autoclaves in the prescribed manner and set controls to specified time and temperature according to material and requirements of items being sterilized. Completes appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization. Reads and initials autoclave graph to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provides required records for inspection.
b. Assembles all instrument procedure trays, linen packs and kits according to the prescribed manner using content lists as a guide. Wraps packages and handles all items following procedure. Marks items with identifying data and distributes or stores in designated area. Notifies supervisor when unable to replace parts or when equipment is deficient in the work area.
c. Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assigns priority to emergency requests and issues required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure intended. Assembles and wraps materials, instruments and supplies according to established aseptic technique.

3) Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment.

4) Assists in orientation of new employees to each work assignment area and overall department operation.

5) Performs other related duties as required such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels; tests effectiveness of autoclave function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary.

6) Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Required knowledge and skills:
1) A graduate of an accredited surgical tech (ST/CST) program preferred. Experience preferred.

2) Certification appropriate to the state of North Carolina and the appropriate certification to the position and St. Luke's Hospital.

3) Proficient oral and written communication skills.

4) Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information and maintain courteous relationships with patients, families, visitors and St. Luke's Hospital employees.

5) BLS required and current.

6) Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures and organizational structure of the unit and St. Luke's Hospital. To include strict adherence to Time and Attendance policy.

7) Participates in ongoing education relative to role as defined by unit requirements.

8) Basic computer knowledge

9) Physical ability to perform the job.

10) Attention to detail.

Work (5) 8-hr shifts plus call
Call requirements minimum: 1 day/week and 1 weekend/month. Weekend consists of call starting Friday 7a to Monday 7a
