Columbus, NC 28722
Office: 828-894-0581

Belynda Dunn Veser, MD, ANPN

St. Luke's Hospital Center of Behavioral Medicine offers compassionate and respectful care to senior adults with mental health issues such as depression, Alzheimer's dementia, manic depression, situational and adjustment problems and other psychiatric issues.

Our 10-bed inpatient unit for adults (age 55 and over) is designed to help patients achieve the best quality of life through group therapy, pet and music therapy, art and activities in addition to appropriate medications if necessary. Private rooms are comfortable, the halls inviting, and the dining and family rooms are pleasant and welcoming.

Decorated with the touches of home for a calming effect, our center provides compassionate care with a team of specialists that includes psychiatrists, a social worker and nurses to ensure each patient's needs are met to the fullest extent possible. Medical and health professionals including a dietitian, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist are available for consultation and treatment. Consults with a neurologist and geriatrician are also available if needed.

Evaluation

Our initial work-up and evaluation could consist of psychological tests, a head CT or certain lab studies to rule out underlying medical issues.

Treatment

Several treatment options are available and may be used independently or in conjunction with others, including:

Family consultations (with patient consent)
Appropriate medications
Group therapy
Recreational activity therapies

We accept self-referrals as well as referrals from physicians, social services, rest/nursing homes, and hospitals. In addition, we provide in-home assessments to determine the appropriate level of care.
