Laboratory Assistant Job Description

St. Luke’s Hospital has a new opportunity for a Laboratory Assistant! The Lab Assistant performs secretarial, general and other office work to assist the lab manager and other lab staff with clerical and administrative details. This position must be able to use independent judgment, exercise a high degree of autonomy and handle routine administrative duties. The Lab Assistant must also be phlebotomy certified and will be responsible for assisting with blood collection procedures including venous blood samples, blood cultures, bleeding times, heel-sticks, finger-sticks, throat culture, urine and drug screen collections on patients of all ages.
St. Luke’s Hospital Criteria Based Performance Standards, Hospital Policies, Joint Commission Regulations and various other laws/regulations require that we assess the ongoing competency of our staff to assure that the staff maintains competency to perform their duties proficiently. Competency evaluation may include tests for knowledge, demonstration of skills and direct observation of performance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1.High School diploma or GED required; prior secretarial skills preferred.
2.One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
3.Phlebotomist with less than five (5) years of experience and is not certified when hired they must obtain certification through a nationally recognized organization, such as ASCP, NHA, etc., within one (1) year of hire date.
4.In lieu of certification, five years (5) of work experience as a phlebotomist, medical assistant, or nursing assistant performing venipunctures will be accepted.
5.Phlebotomy certification must be maintained and any continuing education (if required).
6.This position may be full time or part-time
7.One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
8.High level of competency in the use of office equipment including copier, fax, multi-line telephone system, as well as high comfort level with electronic health record systems.
9.Must be able to exercise a high degree of autonomy in handling all routine administrative duties.
10.Must be able to use independent judgment.
11.CPR Certification required or within 3 months of employment and maintain current certification
12.Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform blood phlebotomy procedures on pediatrics toddlers, adolescents, adults, psychiatric, geriatric and incapacitated patients in accordance with current laboratory policies and procedures.
13.Good vision (including color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function effectively in exercising job responsibilities
14.Must be able to perform work in a room with other people, emotional patients and their families, subjected to moderate noise, traffic and interruptions.
15.Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written; demonstrate professional telephone etiquette and customer service skills with both internal and external customers.
16.Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite helpful.
17.Must be comfortable dealing with the public.
