St. Luke’s Hospital has a new opportunity for an experienced Certified Medical Assistant at ! Our hospital is one of the very few critical access hospitals in the country that earned 5 stars in patient satisfaction from CMS in 2020 and we need YOU to help us get to the next level! In this role, you will be part of a progressive team dedicated to advancing the goals of the hospital, meeting the needs of our rural community, and providing outstanding care to our patients. Essential Functions:
Make sure each exam room is clean and fully stocked checking expiration dates when needed. Requesting supplies as necessary.
Assist with the patient flow by getting patients in rooms, preparing patients for physical exams, and taking an initial history or new problem worksheet.
Takes and records vital signs any updates to allergy list, reviews and records medication list.
Also assisting the provider by updating recommendations in the system.
Backs up and assists teammates when necessary, making sure patient care is prompt and accurate.
Assists or performs wound care, dressing changes, and suture removal. Knowledgeable of each procedure performed having necessary equipment and paperwork completed when the provider is ready to begin.
Draws up meds and preps patients for injection given by the provider.
Check the EMR system and/or encounters for referrals, orders, tasks, and special instructions from the provider.
Each MA will be responsible for keeping the Clinical Task updated for the appropriate provider.
Will work with patients concerning the patient portal and messages sent to the providers.
Demonstrates adequate knowledge of normal & abnormal anatomy/physiology of disease entities seen in the Physician's office. Using good communication skills either oral or written, listening and customer service skills with patients as well as a provider(s).
Prescription refills are checked and completed on a daily basis.
These will be through the EMR system, left on Prescription voice mail, or printed by the provider.
Only Controlled Substance prescriptions are to be left at the front desk for the patient to pick up.
Patients will be notified or instructed to check with their pharmacy of any other action(s) taken.
Maintains and updates EMR as required by the practice. Not only by internal notes and messages but also by scanning any necessary paperwork.
Maintain sample medication cabinets, logging any incoming and outgoing medication. Monitor monthly expiration dates and log results.
Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner. Also organizes medical supply closets. Making a list of necessary supplies that need to be ordered.
Collects and ensures proper disposal of medical waste and/or medication(s). Ensures proper disposal of specimens from the front desk container and Lab sink every evening.
Coordinates referrals for EMG studies and other physicians as needed. Notifying the patient and faxing required information to Dr being referred.
Maintains current Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified EKG Technician, and BLS. Will complete in-office certification in Aortic Scan, Holter Monitor, and Pulmonary Function Testing.
Knowledgeable in performing required station checks and documentation as per policy and procedure guidelines.
Each control will vary depending on manufacturer instructions.
Glucometer controls are checked before each use.
Clinitek machine cleaned daily BUT controls are run 1x a week.
HCG (Pregnancy) control controls run once opened and then 1x per month.
Eye wash station at Exam room L3 to be checked and logged 1x per week.
Refrigerator/freezer temps for the nurse’s refrigerator are checked 2x a day.
Humidity/Temp for the office is checked 1x a day.

Performs specialty testing for that patient as requested by the providers and following guidelines established:
Pulmonary function Test (every 6 months to year required) for COPD/ASTHMA.
Aortic Scans (yearly for age 55+) HTN, SMOKERS, DIABETES MELLITUS.
EKG (yearly)HTN, DIABETES MELLITUS.
PHQ-9 (follow-ups with specificity diagnosis) DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, BI-POLAR, DYSTHYMIA.
Able to perform phlebotomy requests as needed.
Certified in performing injections requested by the providers.
To include but not limited to Flu and pneumonia shots, Testosterone, B12, and allergy injections.
Maintains and orders all facility and ancillary machine/equipment supplies.
Telephone answering machine from nursing workstations is checked on arrival in AM and at intervals throughout the day.
Messages are handled appropriately, answering machine is kept updated.
Returns patient's calls in a timely manner (within 24 hours). Deliver special instructions to patients as discussed with the provider.
Participates in staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education in order to maintain professional acumen.
Willingness to learn new advancements in the EMR system. And to perform and complete any task the practice manager may request.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
High school graduate or equivalent. A healthcare background is preferred.
Must have a Medical Assistant certification.
Ability to handle difficult patients and situations in a professional manner.
Flexible in handling new and changing policies and procedures.
Must read, speak and write English well and have basic computer (keyboard) knowledge. Spanish language is encouraged but not required.
BLS required.
Must demonstrate the ability to perform blood withdrawal procedures on Pediatrics, toddlers, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients in accordance with policy and procedures in effect.

Any Medical Assistant not certified in phlebotomy when hired must obtain certification through a nationally recognized organization, such as ASCP, NHA, etc., within six months of the hire date.
